SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – State Rep. Angela Romero (D-UT) represents Legislative District 25 and serves as the House Minority Leader in Utah -- but to really understand Rep. Romero and her story, you need to understand her grandparents.

“My grandparents took on the role of mother and father and they raised me from the time I was born,” she said. “I've known nothing but them.”

Romero’s grandparents moved to Tooele from New Mexico. She told ABC4.com that when they first came to Utah, they weren’t well-received because of their race. They used their experiences to teach Romero.

“She prepared me going into kindergarten that there were to be kids that would call me names or wouldn't play with me because I was Catholic or because I was Mexican-American” she said about her grandmother.

Romero said the things she faced as a child and growing up made her who she is today. While her list of accomplishments throughout her career adds up, she said some of the biggest factors behind those accomplishments are her grandparents.

“I took it as a learning opportunity,” she said. “My grandmother said, ‘You don't let anyone put you down because of who you are, and if you see other people being picked on you stick up for them.'”

That’s advice Romero said she tries to do in her work to this day as a legislator and as House Minority Leader.

“You don’t do anything alone,” she said. “You do it as a community.”
